We believe that what goes into a self-tanning formula matters just as much as the results it delivers. Our standards are designed to bring greater transparency, ingredient accountability, and confidence to the sunless tanning industry.

Every product submitted for CleanTan certification undergoes an individual formulation review against our established criteria.
Our evaluation focuses on four essential pillars.
01. INGREDIENT INTEGRITY.
We evaluate the complete formulation, not just the ingredients highlighted on the front of the bottle.
Every ingredient must be disclosed and assessed against our defined ingredient standards and exclusion criteria.
Our review considers the function of each ingredient, its composition, and its suitability for the intended product.
02. SOURCING TRANSPARENCY.
Knowing what's in a formula is only part of the picture.
We require brands to provide accurate ingredient information and sourcing documentation, including relevant supplier details and supporting technical information.
Transparency helps us evaluate the materials behind the finished product, not simply its marketing claims.
03. FORMULATION responsibility.
Certification applies to individual products and their approved formulations.
Brands must submit complete and accurate quantitative formulations, INCI ingredient declarations, and requested supporting documentation.
Any material changes to an approved formulation, ingredient sourcing, or manufacturing process must be disclosed and may require reassessment.
04. ONGOING COMMITMENT.
Certification is not simply a logo purchased for packaging.
Approved products must continue to meet CleanTan standards to maintain their certification status.
We reserve the right to request updated documentation, reassess products, and suspend or revoke certification when requirements are no longer met.

Ingredients on our exclusion list are not permitted in certified products, subject to any explicitly defined exceptions.

The mark identifies an individual self-tanning product that has successfully completed our review and met the applicable certification requirements.

No. Certification is awarded to individual products, not entire brands. A brand may offer both certified and non-certified products. Look for the mark on each approved product.

No certification can guarantee that a product is suitable for everyone. CleanTan® certification confirms compliance with our defined standards. It does not guarantee that a product is allergy-free, irritation-free, or appropriate for every skin type.

Select the number of products you wish to submit, complete your application, and purchase the formulation review. Our team will contact you to initiate the process and request the necessary documentation.

Be prepared to provide a complete and accurate quantitative formulation, full INCI ingredient declaration, ingredient sourcing information, supplier documentation, and any additional information requested during review.

Yes. Brands may submit products during development or before launch, provided the formulation is sufficiently finalized for review. Any subsequent changes must be disclosed and may require reassessment.

No. The application fee covers the formulation review process, not certification approval. Products must successfully meet all applicable requirements before authorization to use the mark is granted.

No. Certification does not have a scheduled expiration date. It remains valid as long as the approved formulation and ingredient sourcing remain unchanged and the product continues to meet CleanTan® standards.

You must notify CleanTan® of any changes to the approved formulation or ingredient sourcing. Changes may require reassessment before continued use of the certification mark is authorized.

No. CleanTan® does not require routine annual renewal fees. Certification remains valid subject to ongoing compliance with our standards.

Yes. You may submit multiple products through one application. Each individual formulation is reviewed independently, and certification of one product does not guarantee approval of another.

No. The CleanTan® Certified name and mark may only be used for approved products after written authorization. Purchasing an application does not grant permission to display the mark.

Yes. Approved brands may purchase a custom color version of the official certification badge for $50 per colorway. The original design, typography, spacing, and proportions remain unchanged.

Yes. Our optional Brand Spotlight service is $99 per brand. It includes a dedicated page showcasing your brand story, approved products, product imagery, and direct shopping links to your website. Purchasing a Brand Spotlight does not influence certification decisions.
